What Ice Cream Flavors Would You Pick For The Great Lakes States?

Our friends at Michigan Radio report that the Hudsonville Creamery and Ice Cream Company wants to create a flavor that reflects the taste of the Michigan outdoors. (Okay, we know Moose Tracks already exists, but maybe Creme de Pine?)

What are the flavors of the Great Lakes states?

That got us thinking: what flavors would you pick for each of our Great Lakes states?

Wisconsin Cheese Curds?

Ohio Buckeye Crunch?

Illinois Corn Pudding?

Indiana — Anything?

Send us your nominations and we’ll post a list for each state.

Update: Culvers tells us on Twitter.

“We have done a Pretzel and Mustard Fresh Frozen Custard for a special event in Middleton, Wis., for the Mustard Museum!”

And we reported on Pierre’s, Kevin!

Buckeyes are southern Ohio trees and not really Great Lakes.  Here in NE Ohio we have both maple sugaring and an abundance of native Walnut trees.  I would nominate either maple flavor or butter walnut as representing the flavor of the Ohio outdoors north of the great divide.

Haans, a lot of us don’t know that difference. Thanks for pointing it out. I’m a big fan of maple syrup, too!

Wisconsin Buttercream (and, to reflect the politics in the state, a batch would be recalled)

We hope that wouldn’t endanger anyone in Wisconsin! Thanks, Alex.

Oh I might ask: Have you ever eaten a real buckeye nut? Not only are they foul tasting, they are also slightly poisonous.  They can be used for starch after distilling out the naturally occurring acetone, which is a common solvent.

Never: the only ones I know are the candy that you mention.

  • Haans

@Kevin, the Pierre’s flavor does not use real buckeyes but rather the chocolate covered peanut butter candy that is made to look like the nut.
