This Week From Changing Gears: Cars, Color and Cocktails

The 2011 model year is underway. So is fall. And it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere.

This week, Changing Gears’ Cleveland reporter Dan Bobkoff gets behind the wheel of the new Chevrolet Cruze. It’s more than just a car: it may be a lifeline for General Motors, Michigan, and Ohio. It also faces some stiff competition from another company whose manufacturing operations are based in our region: Honda.

Meanwhile, our Chicago reporter Niala Boodhoo reports on one of the Midwest’s most popular modes of tourism: color tours. Even if the recession keeps residents from planning long trips, they still like to view the autumn leaves. And some destinations say this is their busiest season.

Ann Arbor reporter Kate Davidson thought she was going for a leisure canoe trip on the Huron River a few Sundays ago. Instead, she discovered that the recession is never far away.

Here at, we’ll visit one of Ann Arbor’s busiest restaurant’s, Zingerman’s Roadhouse, for the latest in our series called Reinvention Recipes. They’ve mixed up a new twist on a cocktail classic, the Manhattan. (And yes, we gave it a taste test.)
