Amazingly, Cleveland Balances Budget with No Cuts, Concessions

With states and cities facing fiscal crises of historic proportions, it might come as a surprise that Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson has managed to balance the city’s 2011 budget with no layoffs or cuts in services. Some of the shortfall was made up by one-time property sales, but even so, it’s a pretty remarkable accomplishment for a mayor who rarely touts his accomplishments. Consider this, Chicago’s budget deficit is more than Cleveland’s entire budget for 2011.
