During the course of the day, however, the suspicion that the perpetrators had apparently sawed down bollards within a radius of several kilometers of the crime scene before their attack was confirmed. Purpose of the action: In this way they got free travel across the city, covered by the dense foliage of the parks and away from major streets with any police barriers.
Then on Tuesday the getaway car, a dark blue VW Passat , was found with a completely destroyed front in the district of Großzschocher, the escape route was finally clear. It led from the city center through parks to the south-western edge of Leipzig.
Escape in a wild ride right across the Sachsenbrücke
On their wild ride with a half-wrecked car over footpaths and through parks, the perpetrators risked human lives, because even in the middle of a summer night Leipzig parks are still populated.
From the scene of the crime in the pedestrian zone, the men raced in the blue Passat onto the Ring to the New Town Hall, then Turn right through Tauchnitz-Strasse to the roundabout and – now comes the highlight – straight into Clara-Zetkin-Park. There it went wild over the Sachsenbrücke bridge in a westerly direction, just before the end of the park left into the Nonnenweg.
Cars are forbidden there, the path leads through the densely wooded area “Die Nonne” and flows into it in the Schleussiger way. There are bollards there to stop motorists – but the perpetrators sawed them off. So they turned unhindered to the right onto Schleußiger Weg, continued to the Könneritzstraße intersection, turned left there into Pistoriusstraße and raced through the villa district, past the tennis court to the Elster flood basin.
Attempted jewel robbery: The perpetrators were at least able to implement the escape plan of their cinematic coup – for the time being
There, at the headquarters of the Leipzig canoe club, it’s actually also the end for cars: A bollard system prohibits the passage along the river to the weir at the Weißen Elster. But here, too, the three men had taken precautions and sawed off the bollards. In this way, they were able to continue their escape route, which the police could not have foreseen.
The gang had even considered that there were no inhabited houses in the vicinity of the selected passages. In this way, they were able to unbolt the bollards in the middle of the night without a resident raising an alarm about the noise.
Finally, they steered their badly damaged Passat into a side street in the Großzschocher district, parked it on the side of the road and continued their escape in an unknown way. Großzschocher is right on the outskirts, several federal roads and the Autobahn 9 and 38 can be reached quickly.
